Why inflation calculators matter
A pound today doesn't buy what it bought five, ten, or thirty years ago. Prices for everyday goods, wages, and property all move at different rates, and the gap between them is exactly what makes questions like "is my pay rise actually worth more?" or "was that a good house price historically?" hard to answer from memory alone. These calculators use the same index figures the Bank of England and HM Treasury reference, so the answer is grounded in official data rather than a rough guess.
How the calculations work
Each tool compares two points on an official index and scales your amount by the ratio between them. The general and salary calculators use the CPI all-items index; the house price calculator uses the UK House Price Index. Every calculator page below has a full methodology section and links to the exact ONS or HM Land Registry source data.
Common questions
What data does this site use?
All figures come from official UK government statistics: the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) published by the Office for National Statistics, and the UK House Price Index published by HM Land Registry. Nothing is estimated or scraped from third parties.
How often is the data updated?
CPI is released monthly by the ONS, typically in the third week of the following month. The UK House Price Index is also released monthly, with a slightly longer lag of roughly two months. This site refreshes automatically shortly after each release.
Is this an official government website?
No. YourInflationCalculator.com is an independent site built on top of freely available UK government open data, not affiliated with the ONS, HM Land Registry, or HM Government.
